Clonal is dodecanenitrile, the nitrile counterpart of lauric aldehyde. It smells of dry orange peel with a metallic, aldehydic zest and a grapefruit edge, and it is far more stable than the aldehydes, even in bleach. It gives citrus and bergamot colognes and functional citrus accords a long-lasting peel effect from traces to a few percent.
Clonal is a synthetic material; PubChem gives its IUPAC name as dodecanenitrile. Formula C12H23N, molecular weight 181.32. The atlas files it under Citrus; its office is modifier and its place is the top.
